Historic Chico California - Must See Sites

 

Bidwell Mansion 
Constructed in 1865, it was the home to General John Bidwell and his wife Annie. The Mansion was the brain child of architect Henry W. Cleaveland. It features 26 rooms, the most modern lighting, plumbing and water systems of its day. Construction cost ran $56,000 plus. The overall style of the three-story brick structure was that of an Italian Villa or country estate. 525 Esplanade. Call 530-895-6144 for information and tour times.

Honey Run Covered Bridge
Built in 1894, the Honey Run Covered Bridge is the only three-level covered bridge in the nation, and one of the few left standing in California. Five miles East of Chico on Honey Run Road in beautiful Butte Creek Canyon.

The Stansbury House 
This amazing example of Italian-Victorian architecture is more than 100 years old and reflects life in Chico during the 19th century.  Built in 1883 out of sugar-pine lumber for a Chico physician named Oscar Stansbury and his wife Libbie, it remained in his family for more than three generations.  The house now belongs to the City of Chico and remains a showcase for those interested in local history.  Call (530) 895-3848 for more information.

The Chico Museum
Housed in the former Carnegie Library Building, The Chico Museum has hosted more than 85 exhibits celebrating the distinct heritage of Chico. Featured are artifacts relating to Chico's past including alters and antiquities from the Chinese Taoist Temple constructed in 1890.
